The Universidad del Golfo de México is ready to welcome its seventh generation of summer students. This year the project will again take place in Oaxaca, city of the Zapotecs and capital of the state of Oaxaca. New this year is that the first week of the project will be organized in Orizaba, home town of the rectory.
The summer project at the UGM provides foreign students with an opportunity to become familiar with local habits and culture in Oaxaca and surroundings to understand the Mexican way of living and to learn Spanish in a natural way.
The project lasts four weeks. Students arrive to Orizaba (Veracruz) on Friday, July 13th 2012, where we will stay there for the week in local host families and enjoy cultural activities and some tours. On Saturday 21st we all travel together to Oaxaca where the rest of the project will take place. All activities (and goodbye party) finish on August 11th.
During the program, students will take Spanish classes (3 hours a day, 60 hours all together), starting on July 16th. The goal of the Spanish courses is to develop holistic linguistic skills, on the basis of the appropriate grammar and practical vocabulary corresponding to each level of proficiency. In the extra hour course (20 hours all together), attention will be paid to Mexican culture, literature and traditions. At the end of the course, students will take an exam and obtain a certificate.
In afternoons, students will be invited to participate in workshops, such as, dancing, handicrafts, but above all related to exploring the region through organized trips and tours.
In Oaxaca, we will visit the archaeological site of Monte Albán (Zapotecs) and we will explore the region of Mitla (archaeological site), Tule (biggest tree in the world), Yagul (zapotec fortress) and the market of Tlacolula. Those “local” trips are included in the inscription fee.
